Velvet Worm

Oroperipatus ecuadoriensis

These guys aren't that unpopular, and for good reason. Everybody likes their slime time. But, did you know some species live in matriarchal packs that hunt together? I find that even cooler, personally. Velvet worms are just awesome.

Phylliroe

Phylliroe bucephala

One of my all time favorite group of animals, I have to give thanks to Trey the Explainer for introducing me. Convergent evolution is crazy. I hope one day I'll get to see one in person, although the chances are very very slim... mythic rarity pelagic slug.

Painted Sand Grouse

Pterocles indicus

Found out about these guys just a few days ago, really great patterns. I love how the chicks look, so dusty.

Acoel Flatworm

Amphiscolops (species unspecified)

Oh my god. Holy friggen peak.
me when i am actully comprised of two different organisms that mutually benefit from one another so i teeter from being a plant or an animal and im an active predator and also have the classic worm ability to duplicate when chopped up.
i bunch myself up like a tent while I squirm around but when i find a nice sunny spot I flatten out to the 2nd dimension and photosynthesize to collect all that sweet sweet sugar and maybe feed heterotrophically as well in the meantime for a double boost of fuel.

Rokus Groeneveld

Maidenhead Aquatics

Electric Catfish

Malapterurus electricus

I really like how unassuming they look, really nice smooth shape. To be honest, this one was on my mind for a while cause I made an earthbound comic with Jeff and Tony and Tony said Jeff looked like an electric catfish. I still associate this animal with Jeff now. I hope you Earthbounders see the vision too...

Two-spotted Beautiful Running Crab Spider

Pulchellodromus bistigma

...What a ridiculous name. For a spider??? Aaaaaahhh just kidding, I love it. And I love the patterns on this one! Can the little guy handle a big name like that? I'd like to think so. I have faith.

Jerdon's Courser

Rhinoptilus bitorquatus

Woah, I'm sorry man I didnt mean to sneak up on you.

Big fan of the story behind this species though, very elusive until recently. They've got a nice voice.

Emerald Toucanet

Aulacorhynchus prasinus

His name is Yoshi

Say hi Yoshi

Kim and Kyle

Giant Eland

Otter Civet

Cynogale bennettii

This guy is all whiskers huh. I like civets, underrated mammals. These guys in particular seem to be more obscure, they deserve more attention.
The guy in the photo is named Nemo, thanks to the photographer!

Salamanderfish

Lepidogalaxias salamandroides

Salamanderfish Salamanderfish Salamanderfish Salamanderfish Salamanderfish Salamanderfish Salamanderfish Salamanderfish
Not "Salamander fish" not "Salamander-fish" Salamanderfish. Get it straight.

Look at their feet. They are awesome.

Gerald R. Allen

Chien Lee

Tufted Pygmy Squirrel

Exilisciurus whiteheadi

I think this is what fairies look like.

Learning about squirrel diversity in general has been a treat, we really take them too much for granted. Dwarf squirrels in particular are adorable, charismatic little things.

Long-tailed Ground Roller

Uratelornis chimaera

A monotypic genus? Sign me up!! These birds are gorgeous, many rollers don't get the attention they deserve. Also, "chimaera" being its species name is so cool. Aurafarming master.

Hahn Dung

Ernie Cooper

Mouse Botfly

Cuterebra fontinella

People who claim to love animals but shrivel up at the thought of a parasitic species are WEAK I say. Think their life cycle is gross all you want, but it's still quite an interesting means of reproduction. Besides, being a parasite isnt always doing "gross" things. Take cuckoo birds.
Even so, I think many botflies are actually pretty cute as adults... awee

Acoel Flatworm

Convolutriloba (macrophyga?)

Sorry, another acoel flatworm. But like, I just encountered this one while coding tonight and like. Seriously what the heck. A bunch of bullshit on my screen. Quite incredible, I want more!!!!
This photo was taken in France too... unreal.

donalddavesne

Pedro Vargas

Gonyleptid Harvestmen

Sadocus asperatus

Ughhhh harvestmen are such a crazy group of arachnids, way more than just the spindly daddy longleggers you see on raspberry bushes. It's a whole other world out there with quite flamboyant designs.

Javan Turbercle Snake

Xenodermus javanicus

Another monotypic beauty, absolutely a "dragon snake". I love the way their snouts are shaped. They're smaller than the images make them out to be, and have a cool defense mechanism of stiffening up like wood.

Premaphotos

Woolcarder Bee

Anthidium manicatum

Ohh these bees are great. I learned about them by observing them on my own, and watching them do their work. These bees collect the down of lambs ear plants and build nests with them, its so freaking cute. Please just look at this.

Painted Grasshopper (nymph)

Poekilocerus pictus

The bright colors on both the nymphs and adults warn predators of their toxicity, mainly from eating plants like milkweed (similar to monarchs). And if threatened, they can shoot a foamy toxin out of their thorax!! Their colors are so gorgeous though, and they have a nice streamlined shape.

Haneesh K M.

Melissa Alves

Pitangus sulphuratus

BRASIL MENCIONADO!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the suggestion!! These guys are so great, they have a ton of character and make lovely calls. Fesity little predators, full of curiosity. South American celebrities. Check out a painting I made of one recently!!!

Mollisquama mississippiensis

What even is this bro 😭
Well actually I know. It gets its name from the pockets near its gills, which produce a bioluminescent fluid. Other parts of its body also produce light, as this shark lives in dark areas of the Gulf of Mexico. This trait is shared with other kitefin sharks as well. Only this specimin, and a different species discovered in Chile many years back complete the genus. Mysterious sharks... thank you for enlightening me!!

Michael Doosey

Aizar Raldes

Telmatobius culeus

Someone reccomended I'd add a frog, which is very understandable! Frogs are great. I almost added a completely different frog (Tuberculated Torrent Frog) but I came across THESE things instead... I was in a vc when this happened and shared it with my friend, really hilarious frogs. I suppose most water frogs look a bit silly, as their flabby skin increases its surface area, allowing them to breathe easier.

These frogs are endangered, due to their habitat, The Titicaca lake, declining in health. There are conservation projects currently active giving the frogs a better chance at survuving, lets cheer for them!!

Green-Bearded Helmetcrest Hummingbird

Oxypogon guerinii

Such a gorgeous little bird, I really need to be more familiar with hummingbird diversity. They look like little dragons, in a way. Or maybe in no way whatsoever, and they're more like a fairy type mimic to you. Or just a straight up real fairy. Or maybe theyre just a demon!!! A very cute demon. I can't decide for you, manifest your own reality!

Jeison_mac

Elena Gerasimova

Amboherpia heterotecta

Amboherpia heterotecta

This animal is a part of the class Solenogastres which are a weird group of shell-less wormy molluscs. This genus instead grows a hair-like covering to protect itself, made of sclerites. Unfortunately there's not much specific information about this species, let alone a common name, but it's still, yep, freaking awesome.

Indian Doublestriped Clingfish

Rhinolepadichthys lineatus

These cuties stick to the limbs of mature feather stars (called sea lilies). Not much else to say, they have such a cute face and delicate, scaleless composure.

Rafi Amar

Jerry Kirkhart

Penis Fish

...also called the fat innkeeper worm, because it is indeed a worm and not a very unfortunate fish.

ok i dont have much to say about this one either thanks wes for making me add this smile smile

Naked Bulldog Bat

Cheiromeles torquatus

Originally this would have been a different, haired Mastiff bat but I decided to go with this hairless guy cause that's a bit more unusual.

Additionaly, due to the discovery of Vowel the bat, who shares the name species. He is so cute, please look at him.
